Aim, Focus, Shoot - The HyPyC blog

I always love a trip to London - The lifestyle and pace of life do not appeal to me, and I would never live there, however the sights, history and buzz of the city are amazing and I can see why so many visit our capital each year.

In July 2014 I visited London to see Monty Python perform live at the O2 arena with my brother and his fiancé (Monty Python is a British surreal comedy group), whilst down there I did a little bit of sight seeing and visited St Paul's Cathedral, the Tower Bridge and the Tower of London - All of which I havn't properly seen before.

I really enjoyed taking these photographs and trying to capture things from a different angle - The suspension cables of the Tower Bridge, the guards at the Tower of London, people going about their day to day lives on the underground - All great subjects and fun to photograph.

London skyline including the Gherkin and Cheesegrater buildings

This photo was taken at the top of St Paul's - The buildings you can see include the Gherkin, The Cheesegrater, Tower 42 and the Walkie Talkie (I'm sure you can guess which one is which?). It is really interesting to see how the London skyline is developing over the years, what will it look like in 20 years time?

The west face of St Paul's Cathedral

St Paul's Cathedral is an icon of London and England, it has stood proud for hundreds of year and survived such events as the devastating blitz during WWII.

The Shard as seen from the Millennium bridge

I found the Shard an intriguing building to photograph - It just totally dominates the surrounding skyline and dwarfs everything around it! The building itself has beautiful lines, colours and patterns - The glass panels really give it a clean and bold finish.

The Millennium bridge and St Paul's Cathedral

I'm not going to lie - I mainly wanted to see the Millennium bridge as it's appeared in a Harry Potter film (nerd!!!). It is actually a cool bridge too what with the view of St Paul's and vendors selling hot sugar coated peanuts.

The London Underground

The London Underground is undoubtedly a brilliant method of transport regardless of what people say - If you take time to read about it and look at the map properly, it is straight forward to navigate. I like this photo as to me it illustrates the anti-social nature of people - Eyes down, keeping to themselves, phones at the ready - What would the underground be like if everyone actually talked to each other and to strangers?

Walls surrounding the Tower of London

The Tower of London is full of history and intrigue, from the Crown Jewels to the bloody history of the White Tower. This photo was taken outside the Tower complex facing the exterior walls.

The Tower Bridge

The Tower Bridge spans the river Thames and is another of London's famous buildings. I love the statement it makes and the beautiful blues of the suspension cables and bridge structure.

Suspension arches of the Tower Bridge

The colours in this photo are so bright and bold and make the bridge stand out - I particularly like how the Red and White mirror the English flag, and the Red, White and Blue mirror the Union Jack.

The Tower Bridge

Some people say the Tower Bridge is ugly and excessive - I say it's striking, beautiful and a marvellous creation.

A boat crosses the Thames with the Shard looming in the background

Another shot of the domineering Shard, I couldn't escape this building! The colours and patterns in the various glass buildings really make this shot, plus the tour boat in the foreground.

The White Tower

Built by William the Conqueror in the 11th Century the White Tower has stood as a symbol of power for hundreds of years and has played an important role in British history.

Guarding the Crown Jewels

A guard stands outside the building holding the Crown Jewels - I admire the discipline these soldiers display say in day out to stand steadfast and not giveaway to the thousands of tourists.

Suit of armour inside the White Tower

Inside the White Tower there is now an amazing display of armour once owned and worn by Kings, Princes and Soldiers - I can't remember what this particular piece was for, but love the detail embellished on the metal.
