Relaxation on the Red Sea - Sharm El Sheik, Egypt

Sometimes travelling can be a tiring experience; especially the full on sight-seeing adventures that I have recently embarked upon around Europe. It's non-stop from the moment I wake, until the minute I finally crash on my bed. I love this style of travel and I wouldn't change what I do, but sometimes I need a break - A real break where I can simply relax in the sun, read a book and watch the world go by; my time in Sharm el Sheik was one such holiday.

Bay of the Sheikh - Gem of the Sinai Peninsula

Sharm el Sheik is located on the Sinai Peninsula of Egypt (the pointy land mass between mainland Egypt and mainland Israel/Saudi Arabia) and has been transformed into a haven for holiday makers looking for a relaxing time in the sun - It boasts over 90 quality resorts, miles of beautiful beaches, picture perfect clear blue waters, and year round sunshine, with temperatures rarely dropping below 20 °C. All inclusive holiday specialists provide some fantastic packages for Sharm el Sheik with a selection of first rate hotels, and flights from the major airports in England. Below are some points to remember if you are planning a visit to Sharm:

  • Currency in Egypt is the Egyptian Pound (currently £1 = 11.5 EGP circa Oct 2014)
  • Flights to Sharm land at the Sharm el Sheik International Airport
  • Direct flights from the UK take between 4.5 to 6 hours
  • You only need a Visa if you are planning on travelling out of Sharm el Sheik

A Sharm holiday is whatever you make of it

The Package - I stopped in Sharm for a week at the Stella Di Mare hotel - I would recommend booking a holiday like this through a provider as it is hassle free and you can literally book everything you need in one go. For me Sharm was all about relaxing and getting away from the chaos of work, therefore using First Choice meant I didn't have to worry about all the little details of the trip. There are many resorts to choose from depending on what you are looking for from your holiday. I wanted a resort with a swimming pool, beach access and plenty of sun loungers (I'm an uncomplicated man!) so the Stella Di Mare was perfect.

The hotels in Sharm are all specifically built and will generally have everything you need - If you desire, you probably wouldn't need to go out of your resort! I found the food to be a good quality, the service to be impeccable, and the cleanliness and quality of the hotel to be first rate - All for a reasonable price.

What to do? There is so much to do in Sharm, from Parasailing to Scuba Diving and Horse riding and I did NONE of it! I will admit, I literally sunbathed for a whole week and did nothing, but for me, that was bliss. I caught up on some reading, enjoyed a few drinks, and generally baked in the sun until it was time to go out on the town at night. I didn't do any tours, I didn't play any sport, I barely moved from the sun lounger, but I enjoyed it and felt rejuvenated afterwards. If you don't want to simply laze your days away as I did, you will not be unimpressed - There is something for everyone and your tour provide/hotel will be more than willing to assist. Just remember that temperatures can soar in Egypt and any physical activity will be hard work - Make sure you stay hydrated and drink plenty of water.

Nightlife - Now, the one thing I did do properly was experience the nightlife of Sharm el Sheik! Naama Bay is the main nightlife area and if your hotel is not close, there will undoubtedly be regular shuttle buses. Naama Bay is a vibrant place and really comes to life at night; it has a host of shops, restaurants, bars and clubs and really has a great atmosphere. We ventured there several times and stopped out until the early morning, enjoying the party atmosphere. Do not be put off by the vendors and restaurant staff trying to sell their wares or entice you into their venues - They can be a little persistent at times, but if you are clear and confident they will get the idea and leave you alone.

My favourite venue in Naama Bay was the club Pacha - Pacha is a well known nightclub chain from Ibiza which has branched out to places including Sharm and New York. We were lucky enough to see David Guetta do a set in Sharm together with some other amazing DJ's - The music and atmosphere were out of this world!

For me, Sharm el Sheik was the perfect place to unwind and get away from the relentless pace of every day life - If you want to sunbathe and relax, I can't think of a better place to do this. On the flip side, if you are looking for a mix of relaxation and adventure, there are plenty of activities to do at Sharm, and you can always travel further afield with trips to Cairo (Who wouldn't want to see the Pyramids!). Sharm is whatever you make of it and I certainly enjoyed my time there.

No clouds above Sharm!
